Race and Gender

Race and gender have always been an issue in society. Weather it was back in the day or now in the days. These two topics have been going through some changes but still develop to show problems within any community.

Back then gender was a big obstacle if you were a girl/women. If a women wanted to get a job outside the household,  either the father or the husband would prohibit that from happening. Women weren’t meant to do anything outside their home, it was their job to stay inside to cook and clean. The men were the ones that were considered as the breadwinners.

Race was worse back then because there was only certain places that the blacks, whites, and the natives would be able to go. If a different race went to a place where they weren’t allowed, they would be put in jail or hurt in some kind of way. It was a difficult time back in the days. Martin Luther King Jr. made a difference although he was assassinated, he left his legacy and because of him everyone is not limited to go anywhere.

Not only was it difficult for women to do labor when they wanted to, trying to do something they like, like a hobby outside their home was not a great idea according to the fathers/husbands. A hobby for example, like soccer. Soccer was invented in the mid 1800’s. Rugby was something invented around the same year. It is very similar to soccer just with the ball at its hands, instead of feet. These two sports were invented by males and played by males only for a long period of time.

Most women had interest in this sport but never really attempted to play it because most male players were against it, for example they would comment “this is a rough sport you girls/women won’t be able to handle the pain”. That infuriated and offended all women because they thought that they weren’t capable, which they themselves did.

So after a couple of years, in 1950 the first organized women soccer league was in the United States, the Craig Club Girls Soccer League, which consisted of four teams in St. Louis, Missouri, playing 15-game seasons. Of course this was not supported as much but the women made it happen.

Mia Hamm, a big inspiration to many females, in March 17, 1972 she was considered the best female soccer player in history. She played in the U.S.A soccer team for 17 years and created a big fan base as an American athlete.

As we see, now things have changed and we can see women or anyone today can be capable of doing what they want to. Soccer is my passion and if I set my mind to a dream I wish to accomplish, I will accomplish. Nothing can stop you from doing what you believe is right, only you can, so get through the obstacles and show everyone what positivity can you spread.

Anything is possible if you just believe!
